"Poiret: King of Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Monday night's annual Costume Institute Gala event, which celebrated the extraordinary fashion art of early 20th century French designer Paul Poiret, was aptly described by glam attendee Christina Ricci - "It's like the East Coast Oscars!" No awards were handed out, but the "Black Snake Moan" star isn't too far off. The list of celebrities who made it out to New York's famed Metropolitan Museum is intimidating. The gala was co-chaired by "Vogue" editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and superstar Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, and the red carpet was graced by the likes of Cameron Diaz, Liv Tyler, Lindsay Lohan (looking stunning), Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Simpson, John Mayer, Renee Zellweger, Gisele Bundchen, Naomi Watts, Mary-Kate Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Hilary Swank...and on and on.

The event marked the opening of the Poiret retrospective at the Met, titled "Poiret: King of Fashion". Poiret was famous for his innovative women's fashion, which refreshed stylish Parisian ladies by largely ridding of the restrictive corset. Poiret's designs often featured roses, a consistent motif, and East Asian influences. His revolutionary importance as a designer comes from his creation of the modern brassiere, which is still a major part of women's fashion and everyday comfort.
