A dazzling night at the 2008 Tony Awards produced major awards for several different Broadway blockbusters, as honors were spread around without any dominant production. Manhattan-set "In the Heights" won the coveted Best Musical prize, while Tracy Letts's Pulitzer Prize-winner "August: Osage County" scored Best Play. Patti LuPone had an expected win in the Best Actress in a Musical category for "Gypsy", and Best Actor in a Musical went to Paulo Szot for Lincoln Center's "South Pacific".
