For the 16th year in a row, Glamour magazine has honored exceptional women from around the world. This year's namesake award, presented by Brooke Shields, went to Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman who was raped on the orders of a council of elders in her home town of Meerwala in 2002. Rather than remain silent and suffer quietly with the social stigma of rape, Mai went public and eventually managed to bring some of the men responsible for her assault to justice. The award of "Woman of the Year" brings with it a $20,000 prize, of which she says she will donate $5,000 to earthquake victims in Pakistan, and the rest will be used to establish a girls school in Meerwala. On the flip side of Mai’s harrowing experience was Catherine Zeta-Jones’ capture of the "Killer Talent" award and Venus Williams’ strong-arming of "The Comeback" award.
