Borat Sagdiyev thought that it was nice for MTV to give so much air time to a transvestite, and Madonna just thought it was nice of MTV to let her come on stage to fulfill current pop culture’s need for Flashdance: Part Deux. Fifty Cent went home without a penny and the Brits took nearly fifty per-cent of the awards, earning six of the available thirteen presented at the show. As is the tradition of these big here-we-are-and-don’t-you-love-us award ceremonies, the MTV European awards fulfilled its quota of young (and, sorry Madonna, old) rambunctious feral iconoclasts who delight in wrapping themselves in skin tight skin. Besides letting us know who the world (well Europe at least) thinks is the Gorillaz roar, MTV did what it does best: it gave us a surreal spectacle comprised of those who seem to never tire of bouncing, gyrating, and smiling all in the name of providing us with the mindless post-show water cooler banter of “did you see that.”
