Although Hungry Hungry Hippo took home no honors, the third annual Spike TV game awards did its best to look and feel like a real awards ceremony. In cooking, the basic equation for success goes something like this: fat plus sodium equals flavor. And so it goes with award ceremonies: celebrities plus big name musical acts equals television seductive enough to coax the kid in the basement to put down the Twinkie and controller and gawk at a world the less dermatologically blessed are used to only witnessing through a pixilated haze. Beyond the glamour of celebrity hosts, those who skipped the evening's scheduled lesson in Klingon irregular verbs would have been able to see not only 50 Cent and Def Leppard perform but also they had the chance to compile fun questions like, how many different shirts did Samuel L. Jackson wear, and how weird did this year's Cyber Vixen, Maria Menounos, feel when she was lifted off the stage by video game creator Michel Ancel.
