Madison Square Garden jingled all the way through the night with a series of strikingly eclectic acts. On one end of the spectrum Shakira’s bilingual performance brought the welcoming steam of the Columbian jungle to a Big Apple desperately in need of heat. On the other, Sean Paul hypnotized the garden party of mostly women by combining Jamaican patois with highly danceable sounds, making his shameless tales of conquest irresistibly seductive. Then, almost as homage to the heaving walls of females, visions of bands made of boys hot enough to melt Frosty appeared. Fall Out Boy crooned their emo-tional tales of love lost and found, and the Backstreet Boys came out of their secluded alley to remind us all of what life used to be like five years ago. Kanye West showed his more sensitive side by bringing a harpist on stage before providing his requisite warning against gold diggers. The holiday bash ended with the energetic 16-year-old Chris Brown, who, by prancing on stage to "Thriller," demonstrated his eagerness to claim the title of King of Pop. Although he isn't there yet, he proved to the crowd that he was definitely more than just a little helper among those who pitched in to make the evening anything but a silent night.
