Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s latest film is an exercise in cinephilia – a recreation of a long dormant filmmaking style that dominated post-World War II Hollywood. Shot in black & white and using production methods nearly identical to those of classics like “Casablanca” and “The Third Man”, “The Good German” is a welcome experiment amidst the standard holiday fare.

Soderbergh regulars George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Tobey Maguire lead an all-star cast in this noir thriller, which sees an American journalist (Clooney) return to Berlin to find his former girlfriend (Blanchett). He soon realizes that the war haunts the decimated city, and becomes involved in a sinister murder mystery. Like his modern classics “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” and “Traffic”, Soderbergh can be counted on for an innovative film experience.
